Palestinian teacher wins $1 million global prize

Hanan Al Hroub has won a $1m global teaching prize, she grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp and specializes in supporting children who have been traumatised by violence. Awards ceremony took place in Dubai. Pope Francis sent a message that teachers were " the builders of peace and unity". Ms Hanan believes that " teachers could change the world". She now works with refugee pupils with the belief of solving violence and tension. She pledged to spend the prize money on supporting her students. On the occasion Prime William spoke of the incredible responsibilities of teachers and that they could influence, inspire and shape a young person's life for the better. The global prize is created by the Varkey Foundation, the charitable arm of the GEMS international education firm. The prize is intended to raise the status of the teaching profession. The finalists for the Global Teacher Prize included teachers from US, Kenya, India and Finland.
